Investigation of the productivity of plantings at ten Swiss forest enterprises
01.11.2024

Disturbances in Swiss forests are likely to increase. Active planting can therefore be appropriate where there is insufficient natural regeneration. Here the focus lies on introducing species diversity and climate-stable tree species in order to strengthen the resilience of the forest. The WSL tool JuWaPfl (young forest management) provides models for estimating the productivity and costs of the first production stages to forestry practitioners. In the light of the current challenges, we assume that the need for productivity indicators will continue or even increase in the coming years. We have therefore revised the "Planting" and "Wildlife protection measures" models and analysed the performance of plantations with different tools including the application of various wildlife protection measures. In addition to the pure performance indicators, we share our experiences and findings on planting methods, tools used, tree species used, planting material, and planting time.
